What can I use for constipation?

Constipation is the digestive condition in which bowel movements are infrequent and irregular, there may be incomplete evacuation of the bowels, there is also likely to be a passage of small, dry and hard stools, and painful passage of stools. Such infrequent and irregular bowel movements prevent the flushing out of toxins in the body. This means that there is a build of toxins and impurities in the body which can cause other complications. In addition the patient would also experience feelings of tightness, a bloated sensation, discomfort and pain. Constipation needs to be treated quite seriously as if neglected, chronic or frequent constipation can lead to very serious complications like piles, anal fissures and fecal impaction.

Conventional medical treatments can help in the passage of stools to temporarily relieve constipation but they never address the cause of constipation, which means they only offer temporary relief. In sanitations where a quick resolution of the symptoms is essential pharmaceutical laxatives may be a good idea, but in other circumstances natural treatments are the best bet as they address the cause as well as the symptoms thereby offering a long term solution. Natural methods are more effective because they call for dietary and lifestyle changes that are essential and without which no treatment can have lasting results.

In situations where the immediate symptom of constipation needs to be relieved urgently too, natural laxatives are a lot safer despite the reliability of some pharmaceutical products. This is because there is not much chance of developing a dependence or reliance on the natural laxatives as compared to pharmaceuticals. Moreover frequent intake of pharmaceuticals does pose some long term health concerns.

Here are some natural remedies that you can use to overcome your problem:

  • Switch to a diet that has a high fiber content with lots of fruits and vegetables and whole meal cereals and grains.
  • Increase your fluid intake.
  • Allow some dates to soak in milk and consume them along with the milk.
  • Soak some figs in water for the night and consume the water and figs when you wake up the following morning.
  • A mixture of olive oil and orange juice, in equal proportions can also work as a natural laxative. Just have a glass each day.
  • Castor oil can also be used to combat constipation. Just have two or three teaspoons at a time.
  • You can also prepare a mixture of carrot juice and spinach juice to get some relief from the constipation.
