The condition you are experiencing is medically referred to as Constipation. Constipation is one of the most common conditions encountered by many people around the world. It is a minor gastrointestinal problem that can be treated effectively by implementing a few dietary and lifestyle changes. However, if ignored, this condition can lead to the development of piles or other major digestive disorders.
Constipation usually occurs when waste matter produced by the body gets stuck to the colon wall instead of being eliminated from the body. This occurs because the waste created by the body in the large intestines contains water and minerals. While passing into the lower intestines this water and mineral content is absorbed by the smaller intestine for other functions. This causes the waste to become dry and hard as it passes into the colon. The colon absorbs the remaining water before eliminating the waste out of the body. However, in the absence of adequate amounts of water, this process is hampered, as the waste becomes hard and starts sticking to the walls of the intestine and colon. Over a period of time, the movement of the colon becomes slower due to the dried and hardened waste matter thus leading to constipation. As mentioned earlier, constipation can be treated effectively at home; here are a few home remedies for constipation that you can try out in order to experience smooth bowel movements.
- Starting your day with a warm glass of water to which two teaspoons of honey and 4 teaspoons of fresh lemon extract has been added is an effective remedy when it comes to treating constipation. This is because honey is an effective but extremely mild laxative, while lemons contain vitamin C which helps in keeping the body well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is far more important, as the main cause of constipation is the lack of adequate water consumption.
- Apart from water, fiber plays an important role in making sure that the body experiences effective bowel movements. This is because the waste produced in the body is transported from the intestines to the colon with the help of the fiber present in it. If the fiber content in the body is insufficient to carry out this function, it leads to constipation. Consuming foods rich in fiber is therefore essential when it comes to treating constipation. Spinach is very rich in fiber content. Cabbage, broccoli, boiled beet and sweet potatoes are some of the other vegetables that are rich in fiber content.
- Fruits like apples, pears, peaches, oranges and grapes are also rich in fiber content; you can consume these to get rid of constipation.
- Avoid indulging in rich foods like chocolates, dairy products, red meats and deep fried foods for a week. These cannot be digested easily by the body, thereby worsening the condition.
