Insect bites and stings are among the most common problems that we deal with in the summer months because of the increased time spent outdoors. Our contact with nature although extremely fulfilling and pleasurable does bring with it some problems. Contact with insects can range from mild conditions like chigger bites to more painful and potentially dangerous bee stings or wasp stings. Wasp stings are generally a lot more painful than dangerous but if the affected individual suffers from an allergy the reaction can be quite severe and dangerous.
The venom from wasps contains up to thirteen different antigens. A wasp sting would first cause an intense sensation of stinging and for most individuals this immediate reaction is the extent of the injury, provided they have not been already sensitized to the antigens present in the venom. The swelling and pain however does last for several hours before it resolves, so your condition is quite normal and should not be a cause for worry. In such cases where there are no complications and the only effect is a painful bite, you can get relief from natural ingredients and will not need any medicated treatments. Before you apply any natural remedies however there are certain steps you need to follow after being stung. These steps would classify as first aid and are to be followed irrespective of the treatment you will be following - both medicated and natural.
- Remove the embedded stinger, preferably with a pair of fine slant tipped tweezers.
- Use warm and soapy water to cleanse the area, after which simply pat or dab it dry.
- Apply a salve to the site.
Once you've followed these basic steps you can proceed with the treatment. These natural ingredients will help soothe and relieve the pain.
- A mixture made with equal parts of baking soda and vinegar can be applied onto the skin.
- A paste made with salt and water can also work quite well.
- Apple cider vinegar, another common kitchen ingredient can also be applied onto the area with a cotton swab or just dripped onto it. Vinegar and lemon can also be used in a similar manner as they all work because of their acidic content that neutralizes the venom.
- A crushed garlic clove or slice of onion applied onto the area can also relieve the pain.
- Calamine lotions seem to help with almost all itches and bites and they come in handy here too.
