The description that you have provided is inadequate, but in most cases of coughing some general remedies should help provide relief. Coughs are generally described as chronic, dry, whooping, or with the presence of phlegm and so on. By hard cough I would assume that you mean that the bouts of coughing are very severe and hard. It is therefore possible that you suffer from a whooping cough, although this condition is more common in children and toddlers. This highly infectious condition is caused by bacteria, which is why the line of treatment would differ if this is indeed the condition you are suffering from. It may necessitate medical attention, with the need of antibiotics.
A whooping cough would cause long coughing fits or spasms, during which it would be difficult to even breathe. The coughing is also likely to be very violent causing a near spasm or shaking. If you do have reason to suspect that your cough may be a whooping cough it would be wise to consult a doctor. In some cases that are severe the severity and intense pressure of the cough can lead to dry or heaving or vomiting and even cause the blood vessels of the eyes to rupture.
In other cases however where it is simply a severe cough there are plenty of natural methods of treatment that can be quite effective and offer relief from the symptoms:
- Each morning prepare a cup of hot water with a teaspoon of honey and a dash of lemon added. You could even add a pinch of ground ginger to the water instead of lemon.
- Use licorice root steeped in boiling water to prepare a tea that you can drink occasionally. This should however be avoid if you are suffering from high blood pressure.
- Other herbal teas like chamomile tea, thyme tea, and sage tea can also help significantly.
- To minimize soreness and inflammation of the throat do a salt water gargle with warm salt water at least twice or thrice a day.
- Steam inhalation with a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil added will also help clear the respiratory tracts.
- You can also prepare a remedy with a mixture of finely chopped garlic and some honey. Consume half a teaspoon of the as and when you feel a cough spasm develop.
In addition to your diet make sure that you do not consume foods that can aggravate the problem like fried or spicy foods to name a few.
