Black or red spots on your lips may just be a case of pigmentation, but it is better to have it first checked by a doctor or a dermatologist to rule out other more serious causes. Some of the more benign causes of dark spots on the lips include excessive exposure to the sun, smoking, drinking too much coffee and an allergic reaction. Before attempting a home remedy for dark spots on the lip it would be helpful if you knew what the root cause was.
To get rid of these dark spots on your lips, you can try one of several home remedies. Remember, none of these home remedies will work overnight. They all take time so, be patient. The remedies include:
- Apply a sunscreen to your lips every time you go out into the sun. Do this several times a day.
- Avoid biting your lips as that may be one of the causes of the dark spots.
- Apply aloe vera gel to your lips regularly. This should help lighten your lips and get rid of the dark spots.
- Apply a lip cream made from mixing honey, almond oil, milk powder and lemon juice in equal proportions. Apply this mixture every day and leave it on for at least 15 to 30 minutes.
- Rub a slice of raw potato over your lips. This acts as a natural bleach and should help to lighten the spots.
- Lime juice mixed with glycerin also makes an effective bleaching agent and can be applied to your lips.
The knots or bumps on your lips are probably caused by mucoceles. These are cysts that form, mainly due to blocked salivary glands. Mucoceles respond well to home remedies, one of the most effective being alum. Applying alum to the cyst will cause it to grow rapidly and pop as well as lessening the chances of an infection and inflammation occurring. Apply a small amount of alum to the mucocele for at least 15 minutes before rinsing it off with a mouthwash.
Another popular remedy for mucoceles is salt therapy. Dissolve one teaspoon of sea salt in a glass of warm water. The warm solution should be used as a mouthwash up to 3 times a day. The size of the mucocele should reduce after 4 to 5 days.
These home remedies should only be attempted after consulting a doctor to rule out more serious causes.
