Gum infections are quite a common oral condition; however, they should be attended to quickly. Also referred to as gingivitis, gum infections often occur due to poor oral hygiene or due to certain bacterial infections that affect the mouth. If neglected, gum infections lead to an oral condition called periodontitis. This condition is severe as it affects the bone and soft tissue that support the teeth, thus leading to tooth loss and other serious health conditions. Periodontitis is also known to increase the risk of heart problems. Therefore treating a gum infection in the initial stages is imperative in order to avoid any future complications. A visit to your dentist should not be delayed, however you can also start caring for your gums by using a few simple home remedies and lifestyle changes.
- Brush your teeth after each meal. This ensures that no food particles are left behind in your teeth for bacteria and germs to act upon. If you cannot brush your teeth after each meal at least rinse your mouth with warm water thoroughly. Warm water helps in loosening the food particles and also gets rid of the oil and sugar content left on the teeth after a heavy meal. Avoid using toothpicks as they could rupture your gums, leaving it sore and infected.
- In order to treat your gum infection and irritation, gargle with warm salt water. Salt contains calcium and iodine that helps in maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Warm water will help in soothing your sore gums.
- For another effective mouth wash, mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 2 parts of water. Rinse your mouth with this solution twice a day. Apple cider vinegar contains effective anti bacterial properties that will help in getting rid of your gum infection effectively. This solution will also help in getting rid of the bad breath that most people experiencing gum infections face.
- You can massage your gums with clove oil or simply chew on a piece of clove. Clove is very effective when it comes to treating tooth conditions. Clove oil works as an effective anodyne (painkiller) and also helps in eliminating the infection causing bacteria to some extent. Make sure you don’t swallow your spit while chewing on a piece of clove or when clove oil is present on your gums, as clove oil can induce nausea.
Please visit your dentist to ascertain the actual cause of your condition, if your condition does not improve, after using the above mentioned remedies.
