Recurrent Sty Causes
A sty usually occurs when the eyelash follicle gets clogged with dirt, bacteria or excessive oil. Recurrent sties can be an indication of:
- A Buildup of Bacteria: When bacteria enter an oil gland on the eyelash, they lead to the development of sties. Touching the sty or popping it can cause the bacteria to spread to other parts of the eyelid. Recurrent sties often occur due to bacteria not having been contained and controlled.
- Inadequate Hygiene: Poor hygienic practices such as touching the eyes with dirty hands, wearing makeup overnight or using expired products often leads to the presence of staphylococcus, which is the main cause of sties.
- Blepharitis: This chronic eye inflammation has an adverse effect on the oil glands in your eyelids and leads to swelling, watering, itching, irritation and redness. Blepharitis sties can be malignant or benign.
Since some of the causes of recurrent stys are quite serious, it is best to have a doctor check your child as soon as possible.
Treatment for a Recurrent Sty
There is no specific treatment path to be followed for stys, as they go away on their own within a few days. However, you can control the uncomfortable symptoms that accompany the lump, with the help of the simple home remedies given below:
- Boil a cup of water and add a teaspoon of coriander seeds to it. Once the water is boiled, strain it and let it cool, before washing the affected eye with it.
- Dip a fresh teabag in some clean water for a minute or so. Place the wet teabag over the affected eyelid for about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Take a clean, warm washcloth and place it over the eye for a few minutes, to alleviate the discomfort and reduce the inflammation.
- Slit an Aloe Vera leaf lengthwise and place the pulpy side on the affected eye. This helps reduce the redness, swelling and itchiness.
