Your eyes are one of the most sensitive organs in your body. They are also one of the most easily stressed and strained organs in your body. Two main causes of red and irritated eyes are allergies and fatigue. Here's what you can do to relax your eyes after a long day in front of the television or a computer screen:
- Often red eyes are a result of dryness. Pouring some artificial tears in your eyes can help keep them lubricated. These tears can be purchased as over-the-counter medications from various chemist shops all over the world.
- Among the home remedies for eye irritation is a cold compress. It can help reduce fluid retention around the eyes and also help constrict the dilated blood vessels, regulating the flow of blood.
- Use some green tea to splash on your eyes. Simply brew some green tea by boiling the tea leaves in water. Now cool the tea and soak a soft washcloth in this tea. Place the cool washcloth on your eyes and relax yourself. This is among the best home remedies for burning eyes.
- If your redness and dryness in the eyes is caused due to an allergic reaction, you can use antihistamine eye drops to soothe the eyes and control the irritation as well as itching.

What causes eye irritation?
Eye irritation may be caused due to a lot of different reasons. However, there are only two main types of eye pain: ocular and orbital. Ocular pain is caused when the pain is at the surface of the eyes, and orbital pain is when the pain radiates from inside the eyes. The eye irritation symptoms are usually considered to determine what the causes of eye irritation are. One of the most common problems in the eyes is eye infections. Conjunctivitis or eye stys are both common causes of infections, and both of these cause significant irritation in the eyes. Corneal ulcerations, which are caused due to scratches on the corneal surface, are also responsible for a lot of redness and irritation of the eyes.
Redness and irritation of the eyes could also be caused due to a chemical splash in the eyes, spending a lot of time in front of the television or the computer screen, allergies, chemical burns around the eyes, and obstruction of blood vessels around the eyes. If there is a foreign body in your eye, that too could cause significant pain, redness and irritation in the eyes. Glaucoma and blepharitis are other medical conditions that often cause inflammation, redness and dryness of the eyes.

Can wearing contact lenses cause eye irritation?
Contact lenses are a way for people with vision problems to avoid wearing glasses. While contact lenses look great and may help you improve your appearance greatly, it is important to know that contact lenses may cause eye irritations and dryness in the eyes. The biggest danger of wearing contact lenses is that the lens may slip off the eyes and cause damage to the corneas. Although the lens sits on the surface of the eye, sometimes it may not be within reach. If that happens, it may cause severe eye irritation and infections. Another cause of eye irritation from contact lenses is the fact that they make the eyes dry.
If you have been spending some time in front of a TV screen and have been wearing contact lenses along with it, they could cause a lot of dryness in the eyes. As the eyes get dryer, you may experience some amount of irritation in the eyes. It would also cause pain and redness. Women who are on the birth control pill may experience increased irritability in the eyes. It could also cause dryer eyes. If the contact lenses are not cleaned properly, they could cause infections in the eyes as well. A burning eye cure would involve the removal of the lens and the use of cold compresses to relieve the burning. You can also use over-the-counter medications to keep your eyes hydrated.

Eye irritation and itching is a result of allergy due to dust or any other pollutants. Other reasons can be problem in the contact lenses and occurrence of infection. A wash with a saline solution proves beneficial. A solution of 50% diluted honey applied slowly on the edges of the eye is effective in curing any kind of infection. Frequent washing of eyes with clean and cold water is helpful in keeping infection at bay.
