Some of the underlying causes of bubbles on the lips are:
- Cold Sores: Cold sores are usually caused by the herpes simplex 1 or HSV-1 virus. They may appear as a few blisters that are clustered together or as small ulcers in the soft lip tissues or inside the mouth. These sores may also cause a burning sensation. HSV1 is a very common virus and it is estimated that most adult Americans have been infected by it. HSV-1 infection can have serious consequences for your health if you are suffering from any condition that has weakened your immune system such as AIDS or cancer.
- Cancer: Bubbles or bumps on your lips are one of the symptoms of oral cancer. The characteristics of these sores are that they do not heal and you may have white or reddish patches on your gums and tongue. A swollen jaw, changes in your voice and teeth falling out are some of the other symptoms of oral cancer.
- Fordyce Spots: Often mistaken for a sexually transmitted disease, these white or yellowish papules are variants of the sebaceous glands and are completely harmless. Apart from the lips, they may also occur on the inside of the cheeks and on the genitals.
- Burns: Eating hot food may also cause a blister to form over the burnt area of your lips.
Once these causes have been ruled out you can take certain steps at home to deal with your problem.
- For cold sores your doctor may prescribe topical ointments along with antiviral medications to lessen the severity of outbreaks.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the dry winter months. This will keep your body hydrated and lessen the possibility of dry lips.
- Use a humidifier in your room.
- Protect your lips by applying lip balm or petroleum jelly.
- Take a multivitamin pill to make up for any nutritional deficiencies in your diet.
