Discharge during pregnancy does become a matter of concern. But in most cases, it is actually a normal thing, while in some it might have serious consequences. For this reason, it is important to understand why there is discharge during pregnancy.
Discharge during early pregnancy: Discharge during early pregnancy is a symptom that might happen during that stage of gestation. It happens because of the hormonal changes that take place in the body and this discharge is generally whitish or clear mucous known as Leukorrhea. The discharge has a mild smell and does not cause any irritation. You can say that the discharge during early pregnancy is like the vaginal discharge that generally occurs before menstruation.
Discharge and bleeding: In many cases, the discharge and bleeding in pregnancy are inter-linked and happen because of an increase in hormone production. While vaginal discharge may not be a cause for concern, bleeding can be serious. In case of bleeding, it is advisable to get a checkup done. Bleeding can also be a symptom of miscarriage. Often during the initial stages of pregnancy, bleeding along with pain in the abdomen, could imply miscarriage.
Another reason for discharge in early pregnancy is related to ectopic pregnancy. This is a situation where the embryo gets placed in the fallopian tube, instead of in the womb. Since this is an abnormal condition, the discharge from the vagina at this stage could be serious.
Understanding discharge: The discharge is more in early pregnancy as the body has a high level of estrogen and there is an increase in the flow of blood in the vagina. This discharge has cervix and vaginal secretions, vaginal flora that have bacteria, and dead cells from the vaginal wall.
Early on in the pregnancy, the discharge forms a protective layer and plugs the cervical canal. It is then known as a mucus plug. As the pregnancy advances, the mucus is ejected as the cervix begins to dilate. It is a white discharge that is sometimes tinged with blood.
When the discharge is not normal:
- If the discharge is transparent and thin, you should check with your doctor to confirm whether it is just the normal discharge or the amniotic fluid.
- If you are 37 weeks pregnant or less and the discharge begins to change color – to brownish pink, watery or bloody, then it might be pre-term labor. Do check with your health practitioner.
- If you get an itchy sensation and notice that your vulva is inflamed, then it could be a yeast infection.
