Darkened underarms are a problem that occurs quite commonly. It can become quite annoying as it can make a person socially conscious. One is also not able to wear sleeveless clothing. Creams and lotions that have a high chemical content are very damaging to the skin and can have several reactions such as causing itching, burning and darkening of the skin. This is then further aggravated if one is in the habit of shaving the under arm hair with a razor. This is because the hair is not eliminated from the root and the part of the hair that still remains just below the surface of the skin is still visible. Hair removal creams and lotions can have adverse effects on the skin as they can be quiet harsh. These products can cause skin burns and marks that may worsen scars that are already present on the skin.
It is important to refrain from applying any harsh skin care products on the affected underarm areas. Use mild soaps and moisturizers that will not damage the skin in any way. Always perform a patch test before using any kind of treatment for the skin. This involves applying a small amount of the product on a small area of your skin. If an allergic reaction takes place in that area, then you know you are allergic to it. For hair removal also, waxing is a better option as it also serves to exfoliate the skin and remove the build-up of dead skin cells that make the skin appear dull and dark.
You may use some simple home remedies to lighten the skin of the arm pits. Lemon is a powerful natural bleaching agent and will help to lighten the skin considerably. You can either apply lemon juice or rub the affected areas with a slice of lemon daily. Deodorants are usually harsh on sensitive skin and hence you can apply alum powder instead for absorbing the sweat. Baking soda may also be applied to the underarm area after taking a bath. Vitamin E is often recommended for treating skin conditions. A regular massage of the area with vitamin E oil will cause the darkened patches to fade away over a period of time. Application of olive oil or coconut oil also works well in lightening the discolored skin. You may also apply a beneficial skin paste made out of turmeric powder, cucumber juice and lime juice. This can be applied and left on the skin for fifteen minutes, before rinsing with lukewarm water.
