How should one cope with dark and aging hands?
(Last Updated: Jun 20, 2007)
With aging, our skin goes through varied changes. These changes can however be prevented with regular care. Age spots or liver spots occur due to over exposure to sun. It is important to keep the hands protected with gloves to avoid age spots on hands as it is often more exposed. Also, protect hands from harsh chemicals, which we often use while cleaning and washing, by wearing working gloves. There are many hand creams for aging hands that are available in plenty. Use creams that have SPF protection, increase collagen and elastin fiber, and moisturize the skin to keep it firm and soft.
To prevent age spots on hands one can use natural products that are effective and easy to make at home. You can apply apple cider vinegar mixed with orange on the age spots, or use paste of chickpeas to clear the age spots on hands. Buttermilk mixed with lemon juice can be applied on the age spots on hands. Drink plenty of water to cleanse the body of toxins and hydrate the skin. Water helps in producing needed proteins that keep the skin healthy. Milk cream based moisturizers can also be used for aging hands. In addition, wear clothes that are not abrasive but soft and cool on the skin, like cotton and linen.

Aging, a natural process, reflects itself most on the skin, and the yearning for good firm skin is always present, more so in women. Aging skin treatments are accessible in countless products and processes, but one can always choose to make eating healthy food and exercising regularly part of the treatment process. Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants is an effective aging skin treatment as it nourishes and brings healing from within, also contributing to overall well-being. Some of the foods rich in antioxidants include carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, collards, tomatoes, apricots, black currants, blueberries, raspberry, strawberries, pecans, and black plum. Spices such as clove, turmeric, cumin, basil, mustard seed, ginger, chili powder, and cardamom and dried fruits like raisins, figs, dates, plums, and peaches are also good for aging skin.
These abundant food sources taken over a long period of time build up the skin structure and maintain the elasticity and tautness of the skin. Skin tightening treatments include laser treatments, infra-red treatments, and injecting collagen. Nevertheless, the safest treatment is to massage the skin with coconut, almond oil or clarified butter, or aloe vera gel. You should also avoid smoking and alcohol to reduce aging of the skin. Exercise well and eat foods that build collagen like, salmon, sardines, cod, mackerel, tuna that are rich in omega- 3 fatty acids, and garlic, tomatoes, oranges, grapes and lemons.

Natural home remedies?
Aging gracefully with a glowing skin tone is something we all desire. However, in spite of all the care taken, our skin does seem to fade over time, with all exposure to sunlight, pollutants, and grime. The aging body itself also takes a toll on the appearance of the skin. Nevertheless, with natural remedies for aging skin being available within our reach, it is easier to take care of aging skin. Some of the aging skin remedies lie in applying natural oils and creams. Milk cream is excellent in restoring oil content to the skin and making it more elastic. To remove spots on the skin, one can use butter milk mixed with lemon juice and gram flour, which also acts as a scrub and cleanses the skin of impurities.
Use a good cream that offers sunlight protection and moisturizes the skin. You should also wear clothes that keep the body cool, such as linen and cotton. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes and those that are harsh on the skin. Massaging the skin regularly with natural oils such as olive, coconut, or castor oils helps in revitalizing blood circulation and retaining the natural body oils. When using castor, add coconut to lighten it. Smoking and alcohol can be avoided to retain the strength of the skin. Eating foods rich in antioxidants also helps maintain collagen and elastin fibers.

How to get rid of age spots on skin?
Age spots on the skin happen when there is undue exposure to the sun and other pollutants and due to hyperpigmentation, or increase in melanin content in the skin. To revitalize the skin, you can boil dried lemon and orange peels, rose petals, cumin seeds, and holy basil in coconut oil on a low flame, so as to distil the essence of the ingredients in the oil. You can store the oil in a jar along with the ingredients. This oil can be massaged in a circular motion to get rid of the age spots on the skin.
Here are some of the popular age spot removal home remedies:
- Mix gram flour, lemon juice, and milk cream together and use as a scrub. Lemon helps in clearing the spots, and milk cream helps retain oil content of the skin.
- Use of paste made from papaya, straw berries, and lemon juice as a face mask.
- Make it a point to eat foods in rich in antioxidants as they rejuvenate the skin naturally. Foods with vitamin C and vitamin A will help in replenishing the skin with needed nutrients.
Additionally, an excellent sunscreen will help in preventing age spots on the skin.

Here are some tips for dark and aging hands.
- Alpha hydroxyl acid, also known as AHA, is one of the best ways to deal with age induced wrinkles and dark spots. There are a lot of cosmetic preparations that contain these acids. You can resort to lotions and peels that can be used at home. These lotions and peels can be used on your face as well as your hands. These products can also slough off dry and dead skin to expose younger looking skin underneath. This also makes your wrinkles appear finer.
- You can use bleaching creams and lotions to reduce the liver spots and dark spots that may begin to show with age. Hydroquinone is a natural bleaching agent that can help reduce the natural melanin in your skin. Hydroquinone can be purchased as an over-the-counter application. Use an application of concentration up to 2%.
- Exfoliate your skin regularly to remove dry and dead skin. However, avoid over exfoliating as that can cause your skin to become even dryer and appear aged. Do not use too many cosmetics on your hands as the mixing of chemicals may spoil your skin and make it worse. You may also get allergic reactions from the mixing of these chemicals.
- If you have dry skin, moisturize your hands well. Use water based moisturizers so that you do not end up over moisturizing. Apply the moisturizer every day before going to sleep for ensuring maximum moisture absorption.
- Drink lots of water to flush toxins from your body. Also get a lot of sleep so that your skin has time to repair itself.
