Do thongs cause utis and yeast infections?

There is no scientific research that indicates that wearing thongs leads to urinary tract infections or yeast infections. However, many gynecologists report that several women who wear thongs suffer from urinary tract and other infections of the vagina that tend to recur. This could be because the thong is constructed in such a manner that the band of cloth is very thin and fits very snugly against the delicate vaginal areas. This can become the ideal mechanism of transmission of bacteria from the rectum to the vagina. The fecal matter from the anus contains a great deal of bacteria and this could spread to the vagina when the thong moves along this area. The bacteria then make their way up the urinary tract through the urethra and cause infection. Usually panties do not pose a risk for this problem as they are generally looser fitting and thereby allow for circulation of air. Cotton thongs could be a better option than those made of synthetic fibers, but the risk will still not be entirely eliminated.

Since the thong is so snug and closely fitted to the vagina, it could cause friction and irritation to the sensitive tissues of the vagina. This could lead to the development of tiny abrasions and cuts on the skin, thereby increasing the vulnerability to infection. The purpose of undergarments is to pose as a protective barrier between the clothes and sensitive genital areas. However, a thong fails to fulfill this objective and can actually cause more damage than good.

Yeast infections are caused by an increased growth of the stomach yeast or fungus called candida albicans, which thrives in damp and moist areas. A thong is likely to create such an environment as it does not allow air to circulate within the area. If you are prone to these infections or if you suffer from low immunity, then it is advisable to avoid wearing thongs. If you face no problem at all from wearing thongs, then you are lucky enough to be free from the negative effects and can continue wearing them. Besides, urinary tract infections and yeast infections, wearing thongs can also irritate the hemorrhoids and can also cause lacerations in the anal area. It is especially advisable to not wear thongs while exercising. Sweat and heat can get trapped in the genital area making it easier for the growth and spread of bacteria and other microorganisms. Also, thongs must not be worn while sleeping as it can create discomfort and irritation. The best advice would be to stop wearing thongs if you find you are constantly facing infections. Or wear them in moderation in order to prevent future infections from developing.
