Rectal pain is an extremely common experience with many. However, though common, it is not associated with any serious medical condition. The pain can still be intense and therefore a major cause for worry. You may feel more pain when passing harder stools, than when you pass soft stools. Rectal pain can be associated with many different conditions.
The first of these conditions is hemorrhoids. These are varicose veins which develop in the anus when you strain too much while passing stools. People who spend a lot of time in a seated position, or those who experience constipation frequently, are most susceptible to this rectal pain. Hemorrhoids are caused when the veins in the anal region get stressed due to the constant force being exerted on them. This condition is also referred to as piles. When varicose veins form in the anal region, it may become difficult for the person to even sit in one place for long. If a person with this condition experiences constipation, the resulting pain can be extremely intense. In some cases, the hemorrhoids may start bleeding, in which case, blood can be observed in the stools.
Another cause for this pain in the anal region is the formation of anal fissures or tears. The skin in the anal region is extremely sensitive. If you put a lot of pressure for passing stools, there are chances that small tears may form in the skin. These can cause pain to a person who is trying to pass stools. There is usually a burning sensation for a brief period after you have passed the stool, in case you have an anal fissure.
The treatment for this problem is associated with the physical symptoms of the problem and the cause. There is no treatment for hemorrhoids. If the hemorrhoids have started to bleed, the only possible treatment is a surgical removal of the varicose veins. However surgery is done only in extreme conditions. To give yourself some relief, you can discuss with your doctor and consume stool softeners which allow your stools to become soft so that they would not hurt your anal region.
The doctor may give some topical corticosteroids for the anal fissures. The treatment of fissures is simpler and the doctor would give some topical ointments to make sure that the tear in the skin does not get infected. As soon as the fissure heals, you will cease to feel the burning pain after passing stools. It is best if you get yourself checked quickly so that the doctor can start your treatment.
