What are hot water bottle burns?

Hot water bottles are generally used to provide warmth, comfort, and relief from pain. These are often used by the sick and by people living in developing countries where hot water bottles are an inexpensive source of keeping oneself warm during cold nights. When it comes to hot water bottle burns, causes are mainly related to the improper use of the bottle. Burns are caused when the bottle is filled with boiling water and used continuously. Continuous use of the bottle in such manner could cause the bottle to split or crack, causing the skin to scald. In some cases, burns are caused by prolonged use of the hot water bottle, through long hours such as all night.

Although the bottle temperature is low, the duration of the contact causes the slow burning of the skin. As the contact time is longer, the reflex action is fooled and the heat burns deep into the skin. The best hot water bottle burn treatment is to cool the burns with water. Cool water, not too cold, can be poured on the burn, or the burn area may be submerged in cool water. You can also use a cool water compress to relieve pain and reduce soreness. If the burn is mild, remove clothing from the burn area, including jewelry or anything that may cause swelling. Let the burn be exposed to cool water for more than twenty minutes. Avoid using ice, as it can worsen the wound. Also, avoid butter, cream, grease, or any burning powder to prevent friction and risk of infection. Also, cooling anti-microbial ointments, moisturizing lotions, and aloe vera gel or cream can be applied to soothe the area and reduce chances of an infection.

Once the first degree burns heal, the skin will peel off without leaving a scar. Turmeric can also be applied to heal hot water bottle burns. Turmeric is an excellent antiseptic and finds considerable use in hot water bottle burn treatment. Other herbs and natural products such as calendula, propolis, resin from bees wax, and gotu kola are also effective in hot water bottle burn treatment. In severe burn cases, those that involve the layer beneath the skin and cause blisters, it is important to seek medical assistance immediately. These are third degree burns that burn deep through all layers of skin tissues, and should be given proper medical attention. In terms of precaution, to avoid hot water bottle burns, boiling water should never be poured into a hot water bottle. This is because accidental spills would cause burns, and prolonged use can damage the bottle. Also, always check the hot water bottle for any cracks or holes by pouring cool water and squeezing the bottle. For use, always wrap the bottle with cloth or towel to avoid hot water bottle burns. Also, always fill only two-thirds of the bottle to prevent bursting. Secure the lid tightly, and hold it upside down to check for leakage. When storing the bottle, always unplug the stopper and empty the existing water.
