My daughter is 3 years old. She is running a temp of 101 to 102 and has swollen glands and a sore throat. What remedies would you suggest for 3 year old?

A sore throat is an irritation, pain, or discomfort in the throat that could be a result of a number of conditions. Sore throats occur as the throat and tonsils are easily infected due to the polluted air that passes through them. This contaminated or polluted air contains bacteria, pollutants, and viruses that attack and cause damage to the throat tissues. Some of the symptoms associated with a sore throat include fever and chills, irritation in the throat area, difficulty while swallowing, tender and swollen lymph glands, and pain. Here are some effective home remedies for a sore throat that will give or your child relief from the pain and discomfort.

  • Increase your intake of fluids. This will help you flush out the infections faster from your body.
  • In addition to trying out some sore throat treatment at home, try and rest your voice as much as possible. Avoid talking loudly and also make sure that you do not strain your voice by talking too much.
  • Traditional sore throat cures such as gargling with salt water for a couple of days and sucking on sugar-free hard candy are quite effective home remedies for swollen glands and sore throat.
  • Prepare an infusion of henna leaves and gargle with it. Henna has antibacterial properties that helps cure a sore throat.
  • Avoid cold or fried foods, cold drinks, and anything that is sour as it might worsen your sore throat.
  • Mix together a tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of sesame oil. Take one tablespoon of this mixture thrice daily.
  • Add ginger root to some hot water and keep this aside for about 15 minutes. Drink some of this water a couple of times daily for sore throat relief.
  • Take a glass of water and add some coarsely powdered cinnamon, some honey, and a dash of ground pepper to it and boil it. This is one of the most effective home remedies for a sore throat.
  • Grapefruit seed extract is an excellent remedy for sore throat. Take some honey, grapefruit seed extract, and a little lemon, and stir well in a glass of warm water. Sip this concoction slowly twice a day for quick relief from a sore throat.
  • Another effective home remedy for sore throats is gargling with some hot water to which turmeric and a little salt is added. Another great gargle option is one made with raspberry tea. In a cup, add about two teaspoons of raspberry tea and pour boiling water on it. Keep this aside for about ten minutes and use for gargling once it cools.
  • Make sure that your nasal passage is clear. In many cases, it is seen that a dry throat results from breathing with your mouth open while sleeping. A nasal spray (nasal) or some decongestant might help you to breathe more easily.

While all these remedies can be used by adults, for children and babies, some may not be easy or advisable. Sore throat and swollen glands relief in toddlers can be got with the help of a warm compress as many children find it difficult to gargle.

Sore throat remedies for toddlers include giving them some honey or some herbal throat lozenges to suck on. Sometimes a scratchy throat could be due to insufficient moisture in the air. By putting a humidifier or cool mist vaporizer in your baby's bedroom, you can help humidify the room. You could also give your child a warm cup of tea to help soothe the throat. As mentioned earlier, if the symptoms of a sore throat persist for a few days, it is best that you contact your health care provider.
