Can i stop swelling caused by an abcess?
(Last Updated: Aug 24, 2007)
How to stop the swelling depends greatly on where the abscess is located. Most frequently, they are located in the mouth and are a result of a tooth or gum infection. The best way to get an abscess to stop swelling is to get the abscess to break or come to the surface. The easiest and least painful way to do this is to apply a poultice to the abscess. A great poultice is very simple and can be made with things you probably have around the house. This poultice only works if the abscess is NOT located in your mouth!
Old Fashioned Poultice Recipe:
1 slice of bread (whole wheat or white, it doesn’t matter)
2 cups milk
½ cup white sugar
Instructions:
Warm milk and sugar in a sauce pan over medium heat. Once it is hot, but not boiling, and the sugar is dissolved, remove from heat and soak the piece of bread. Let cool just to where it is as warm as you can stand it and not get burned. Apply slice of bread to abscess and wrap with plastic wrap. Cover plastic wrap with a towel and leave on over night. This draws out infection.
