Can pulmonary embolism cause blood clots in the lungs?
A pulmonary embolism is when a blood clot appears in the lungs. This clot can form anywhere in the body and with the blood that circulates in your body and it can travel to different parts of the body. Occasionally it gets lodged in a space too narrow to travel further. This prevents fresh blood supply to that area. Such clots usually occur in the lungs.
Due to this clot, when the blood supply to this area ceases, an infarct occurs. This is known as a lung infarct which implies that that particular tissue is dying due to lack of oxygen. The best way to avoid a pulmonary embolism is to make sure you manage the symptoms in order to prevent complications arising from the embolism.
Pulmonary embolism care involves reigning in the symptoms that could lead to complications. Being overweight is one of them. It helps to exercise and try and bring your weight down. Inherited blood diseases, complicated stomach or OB/GYN surgeries can also lead to clots. Chest pain, smoking or being confined to a sitting position for a long time can also cause clots. Periodic stretching also helps in case you are constantly chair-bound or are taking long flights.
