Can allergies cause swollen tongue?
An allergy is the abnormal reaction of the individual's immune system to some trigger that the body has come into contact with. The actual substance may not be harmful to the body. However, the reaction of the body means that the contact with the substance in question could be potentially life threatening. It is common for allergic reactions to cause difficulty with breathing because of the constriction of the airways. The same reaction can cause the tongue to swell up as well. Tongue swelling allergies are usually caused by food that the individual is allergic to. A good example of this is the allergy to peanuts which can cause the tongue to swell up. In some cases, this swelling is so much that the individual will be unable to speak and will also be unable to breathe through his or her mouth.
People who experience tongue swelling allergies should seek immediate medical assistance to solve the problem. In most cases, there will be visible swelling in other parts of the body as well. This may be represented in the form of facial swelling or swelling in the throat which blocks air flow. In any case, the condition must be treated as a medical emergency.
