Though there are many causes of seizure, in most children it is difficult to identify what is triggering the seizure. The situation can be prevented if the exact cause can be pin-pointed. Once you know the cause, it is easier to avert it. For instance, febrile seizure (caused after a high fever and rise in body temperature) is one of the most common cause of seizure in children. So if your child has a fever, you know you have to prevent seizure by keeping the body temperature low through regular sponging. However, even if the cause is not known, following some simple rules listed below can help in reducing the occurrence of seizures.
- Sleep well. Get adequate amount of sleep each day.
- Do not forget to take all the prescribed medicines. Take it regularly.
- Try and limit watching television and limit the use of computers, video games and phone games.
- Avoid bright / flashy lights
- Stick to a healthy diet
- Try and keep the child calm, relaxed, happy and in a positive frame of mind.
- Some home remedies like applying some sesame or coconut oil (easily available in local Indian groceries across America) to the soles of the feet and massaging it gently every night before bedtime, is supposed to work well for epileptic seizures.
Some children with epilepsy are also prescribed a special diet called a ketogenic diet. Contrary to a regular diet, in a ketogenic diet, 80% of the calories come from fat, while the remaining comes from carbohydrates/sugar and protein. This diet is typically started in the hospital because it normally begins with a 24 hour fasting period and is specially designed as per individual needs. It can then be implemented at home under close follow-up and guidance from the child’s medical team.
