I have allergies and my ears are plugged from my sinus. How can I get them unplugged?

When you have a sinus infection or allergies, the Eustachian tube, which is a small and slender tube that connects the middle ear to the nose, may get blocked. Often, the fluids may drain into the tube, blocking it and causing a feeling of plugged ears. It is not very easy to drain the Eustachian tube, and sometimes, you may need to have it looked at by a doctor.

Sinus infection and ears being plugged is a rather common problem. Fortunately, it is very simple to treat this. There are some simple home remedies that can be used to unplug your ears. Here’s what you can do to treat your plugged up ears.

  • Oral Decongestants: The simplest of home remedies for plugged ears is to use over-the-counter oral decongestants. These are usually able to help drain the Eustachian tube so that you get rid of some other symptoms such as pain and discomfort.
  • Over-the-counter Antihistamines: Since sinus infections are often triggered by allergies, it is possible that antihistamines may help cure the infection. This will help unplug the ears and get rid of the sinus infection.
  • Humidifiers: Install a humidifier in your room. A humidifier can help moisten the air and prevent you from further allergies. It can also help drain out your sinuses and the Eustachian tubes so that your ears do not feel plugged.
  • Chew Gum: Chew a piece of sugarless gum, as this can help balance the pressure inside the ear. You may have to keep chewing for some time before your ear feels unplugged.
  • Ear Oil: Heat some baby oil and pour it into your ear with the help of a dropper. It can help relieve the pressure in your ear by draining water and fluids from the Eustachian tubes.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Mix together equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar. With the help of a dropper, pour some of this mixture into your ear. For best results, heat this mixture and pour it into your ear when it is still lukewarm.
  • Pop your Ears: You can pop your ears open by plugging your nose, closing your mouth and blowing hard. This improves the pressure internally in your ears and helps unplug them.
While these remedies can help you, it would be better if you see a doctor and get yourself checked for an infection. If there is an infection, the home remedies may only worsen it. Additionally, there is no anecdotal evidence to back these remedies, so consulting a doctor is advised.

Treatment to unplug ears-

  1. Do a simple exercise. Take deep inhalation and close both the nostrils tight. Also close your mouth and lip tightly and now try to exhale hard. The air won't come out as all outlets are closed. The air will travel to the ear and activate the ossicles and nerve ends whereby the ear gets unplugged.
  2. Take a homeopathic remedy called Merc sol 30 5 pills once daily for 4 nights at bedtime then stop and watch for 15 days.
  3. Take a high power ie Merc sol 200 5 pills once daily for 2 nights at bed time. Then stop all medicines wait and watch for another 1 month.
