Fluid retention below the eyes leads to a common skin or beauty problem known as puffy eyes. When fluids get trapped in the tissues below the eyes, they result in the eyes appearing swollen or puffy. In most people, the eyes are distended after a night's sleep or a nap. However, fluid retention of the eyes can also be an indication of a mark of sinus and allergy disorders. Eye experts opine that the skin surrounding the eyes is extremely thin and is replete with blood vessels that make it distinctly sensitive. People who experience severe fluid retention, experience acute puffy eyes and complain of unrelenting discomfort, foggy vision, and other related conditions. It is strongly advised to visit an optometrist or oculist to know more about the eye problem and treat it accordingly.
Fluid retention can be caused by many factors. Here are some of the reasons behind water or fluid retention of the eyes:
- Genetic endowment
- Changes in weather or hormonal imbalances
- Allergic reaction or inflammation of the skin, especially if puffiness is associated with inflammation and itchiness.
- Sleeping late hours and severe stress.
- Restless and insufficient sleep
Other responsible factors for causing fluid buildup include excessive sodium in the diet leading to fluid retention, inordinate drinking of alcoholic beverages, amongst others. If there is no underlying medical disorder causing the problem, some home remedies can help in easing the condition. These include:
- Take a couple of metal spoons and place it in the freezer. Else they can be run under ice-cold water. Once the spoons have been reasonably chilled, they must be placed on the puffy area for approximately one minute
- Cut thin slices from fresh cucumbers and place them as compresses over closed eyes or under the eyes where the retention is most obvious, in order to relieve the soreness and puffiness.
- A tea bag steeped in ice-cold water is also very effective as a treatment. The tea bag placed on each eye can be placed on the affected area for approximately ten to 15 minutes to reduce the swelling caused by the retention.
- Avoiding excessive sodium in food items can also help. It is believed that salty foods cause the under eye region as well as the rest of the body to retain fluid.
- Try to raise the head rest before sleeping, in order to keep the fluid from being retained around the eyes.
- It is necessary to drink plenty of water throughout the day in order to improve circulation and prevent fluid retention form taking place.
