Is there anything natural on the market to treat pulmonary hypertension? My dad was just diagnosised with it. He is on oxygen.

High blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs is known as pulmonary hypertension. It is caused by a narrowing or blockage of the pulmonary arteries and results in the heart (right ventricle) having to work much harder to pump blood. Left untreated it can lead to a weakening of the heart and eventually, heart failure and death. The condition is usually caused by an existing disease but may sometimes also occur on its own. It usually affects women in their 30s and 4os. Treatment reduces the symptoms and can improve the quality of life.

In its early stages, pulmonary hypertension does not cause any symptoms. As the condition progresses, symptoms may appear. These include;

  • Shortness of breath that initially occurs after exertion but later on may also occur while at rest
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness and fainting spells
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling in the ankles and legs and eventually in the abdomen
  • Bluish tinge to the lips and skin
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations

The long term prognosis is usually poor but newer treatments have been developed that show promise.  In many cases, the condition progresses until the heart fails and death occurs. The prognosis will also depend on the underlying cause of the condition.

As such there are no natural remedies for pulmonary hypertension. However, certain foods and herbs have been found to support the cardiovascular system and can play a beneficial role when used along with conventional treatments. Foods and supplements that help support cardiovascular health include:

  • Coenzyme Q10: This is an antioxidant that is good for heart health and may help to lower blood pressure
  • L-carnitine: This extract is good for heart health
  • Magnesium: This element helps to lower blood pressure and improves heart function
  • Potassium: This element improves the heart muscle’s contractibility
  • Vitamins E and C: They are antioxidants that protect the heart and strengthen the immune system
  • Taurine: This compound has a beneficial effect on blood pressure and is good for heart heath

Herbs that help support the cardiovascular system include:

  • Hawthorn: May help to lower blood pressure
  • Linden: Acts as a diuretic and helps lower blood pressure
  • Rosemary: Acts as a diuretic and helps lower blood pressure
  • Danshen: Helps to dilate blood vessels thereby reducing blood pressure
None of these foods, supplements or herbs should be taken without first consulting a doctor. This is because they may have adverse drug interactions and side effects that can be quite harmful.
