Abdominal gas, caused either by swallowing air while eating or by the process of break-down of undigested food, can sometimes be very painful, leading to belching, flatulence, abdominal pain and bloating. If there is excessive gas in the digestive tract, it can even make you feel full and thus lead to loss of appetite. Certain foods can also lead to gas production; however what causes gas in one person may not necessarily cause gas in the other person. You can gain instantaneous relief from the troublesome gas by taking a hot water bottle and lying on your stomach. Apart from this, there are a number of simple home remedies which help reduce gas and combat its effects.
The best known remedy for abdominal gas is carom (carom seeds) seeds – swallow 1 teaspoonful with a pinch of salt and warm water. You could also dry naturally, the seeds mixed with lemon juice and have a teaspoonful whenever you feel discomfort. ½ tsp of ginger powder mixed with a pinch of asafoetida, a pinch of rock salt and 1 glass of warm water is another mixture that works wonders. Asafoetida paste applied on and around the navel also provides relief when there is excessive build-up of gas. Finally, remember to exercise, avoid heavy, greasy meals and try eating 5 small meals a day instead of 3 big meals.
