Pregnant women are more prone to problems such as gas and bloating. It may be the result of eating too quickly or swallowing air while eating. The kind of diet would also play a role here as certain foods can trigger gas formation in the stomach. Another reason for excessive gas during pregnancy could be the increase in progesterone levels. Progesterone is known to slow down the process of digestion. The increasing weight of the baby is another major cause of abdominal discomfort in pregnant women. The growing uterus may exert pressure on the digestive tract and slow down the processes of digestion. Gas during pregnancy may be an uncomfortable and bothersome problem, but the good news is that there are many natural ways to treat it.
- Firstly it is important to regulate the diet. Foods such as sprouts, beans and broccoli are known to contribute to gas formation and hence intake of such foods must be limited.
- Carbonated beverages such as sodas and fizzy drinks also lead to gas and bloating and must be avoided, especially since they also do not have any nutritional value.
- It may become difficult to consume three large meals during pregnancy. A better option is to break up meals into smaller portions and consume during the day. This makes digestion easier.
- Avoid chewing gum or drinking through a straw as this can lead to swallowing of air.
- Ginger is helpful in relieving flatulence and bloating. It may be consumed in the form of tea. Ginger capsules are also available. Many pregnant women also find relief from nausea by chewing on candied ginger.
- Fenugreek is a beneficial home remedy for gas. Soak ¼ teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight and have your wife drink that water in the morning. This will help to curb digestive problems.
