Causes & Treating Tips for Dermatitis Herpetiformis

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a skin disorder that manifests in the form of small fluid-filled blisters. Itchiness and blisters are the main symptoms of this condition. Just before the appearance of the blisters, itchiness and a burning sensation may be experienced in the affected region. Abdominal pain and fatigue may also accompany this condition and it could lead to intestinal complications. Dapsone is one of the best known remedies for this condition. However, it could result in a condition called methemoglobinemia, wherein the ability of the blood to release oxygen to the tissues is adversely affected. People with this condition are known to experience symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness and lack of stamina. For methemoglobenemia, it is better to follow the instructions of your doctor as there are no home remedies as such for the treatment of the condition.

Treatment

  • Medication and a change in diet are known to be sufficient for the treatment of dermatitis herpitiformis.
  • Firstly, if dapsone does not agree with you, ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative medicine.
  • Opting for a diet free of gluten is recommended for the treatment of dermatitis herpitiformis. Foods like malts, wheat, barley and rye should be avoided and this may be a lifelong requirement.
  • Massaging the affected area lightly with a tea-tree oil based antiseptic cream is believed to be beneficial, especially if the affected region comes into contact with water or other agents that cause irritation.
  • A mixture of honey, vitamin E oil and goldenseal seal root powder, applied to the affected area may help in reducing the itchiness and burning sensation.
  • The use of Oregon grape root is also known to be beneficial in the treatment of this skin ailment.
  • However, before using any home remedy, it is highly recommended that you consult your doctor so as to reduce the risk of related complications.
