- Keep your toe taped so that it is covered and safe from further injuries. As much as is practically possible, keep your foot above the level of your heart so as to reduce swelling and pain. Lounge on an easy chair and support your foot on a few pillows.
- Crush some ice cubes and put them in a plastic bag. Apply it to your toe for 15-20 minutes at an interval of 2 hours. Take precaution to protect the raw skin from direct contact by placing a thin piece of cloth over it while applying the plastic bag. This process should be repeated for 2-3 days then the application can be done whenever there is pain or swelling in the toe.
- Avoid using soap in the affected area and cleanse it lightly with cotton dipped in lukewarm water.
- Excessive walking and standing for long periods should be avoided for at least the initial 2-3 days as it may put undue pressure on the toe. Any kind of strenuous exercise should be postponed for a few days while the exposed skin heals.
- You can also wear open sandal or some special shoes to allow space to the toe while walking, so that the fracture repairs fast.
- Check in between for redness, soreness or numbness. If these persist or increase, please consult your physician.
