Treatment to stop blood vomiting
(Last Updated: Sep 18, 2007)
Constant vomiting with or without blood is never a good sign. In fact, if you haven’t gone for a check-up yet, do so immediately. Vomiting blood and severe nausea are almost always signs of a more serious underlying medical condition. The problem in treating blood in vomit is that there could be a number of causes for the condition. In order to receive the proper diagnosis and treatment, be prepared with answer the following questions from your doctor:
- When did the vomiting begin?
- How long has it been going on for?
- Has this happened before?
- How much blood is in the vomit and what color and consistency is it? Is the blood red in color or dark brown and similar to coffee grounds in appearance?
- Is there blood in the stools as well?
- Are there any other symptoms you have noticed such as weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness?
- Are you suffering from any other medical conditions?
- Are you on any special medications?
- Do you drink, smoke, or do drugs?
- Have you had any recent surgery, or suffered from nosebleed, stomachaches or severe cough?
- Has there been any weight loss?
In addition to the information you provide, your doctor will also require a variety of tests to determine the cause of vomiting. These may include blood tests, a rectal examination, x-rays or an endoscopy to name just a few. In most cases a rupture in the upper gastrointestinal tract causes blood in vomit. This could be caused by conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcer, stomach tumor or esophagitis. Other possible causes include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, abnormalities in the GI tract, excessive vomiting, liver disease, pulmonary tuberculosis, and alcohol abuse.
In case you are not able to retain any food or water or have vomited too much blood, you may need emergency medical treatment such as a blood transfusion, IV fluids or even surgery if the bleeding does not stop.
In addition to medical treatment, you can also make the following changes to help the healing process and stop the vomiting:
- Stop smoking
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and any kind of stimulants
- Eat bland cooked food such as steamed rice and vegetables
- Eat ripe bananas as they are easily digestible and provide nutrition and help balance levels of potassium in the body
- Drink small amounts of water at a time until you can retain more and more without vomiting
- Avoid spicy, fatty or oily foods
- Avoid foods that smell strongly
- As you get better, eat small meals are regular intervals during the day
- Chew properly and do not rush through your meal

Vomiting blood can be a sign of some serious as well as not-so-serious conditions.Vomiting after eating can impair your health and well being because your food is not being metabolized. This means your body is slowly starving to death. So, please seek the advice of a trained health care professional to help.
