How can i clear congestion?

There are basically two types of congestion; nasal congestion and chest congestion. A nasal congestion or stuffy nose is an outcome of the membranes in to nose being swollen. When the nasal membranes get swollen, the sinus cavities are unable to drain the mucus that they contain. Thus being unable to drain out, it stays there till the swelling reduces enough, to permit it to seep out. Chest congestion on the other hand is the build up of mucus in the wind pipe and is a common occurrence during a cold or a respiratory tract infection.

Several home remedies are available that can help treat both conditions. Oil of oregano is a very popular remedy, to treat both a nasal as well as chest congestion, as it helps in strengthening the immune system. All you need to do is add 2-3 drops of this oil to a glass of juice and then drink it. It is known to yield results within 3-4 days. tea tree oil is also an excellent remedy for a nasal block. Add a few drops of the oil to a bowl of water, now boil the water till it begins to emanate stem. Inhaling this steam will help in opening the nasal passage, thus enabling the blocked mucus to drain out. As an alternative you could also use eucalyptus oil for this treatment. The oil can also be applied on the chest to gain relief from a congested chest. Having hot chicken soup that has a dash of pepper added to it will also help in opening up the sinus passage.

One of the best ways of combating chest congestion is by drinking a lot of water. It will help in loosening the mucus that is stuck to the lungs. Add two to three lime slices to a glass of warm water and drink. The acid present in the lime will help in cutting down the mucus. Placing a bottle of hot water on the chest will also provide relief, as this will help in loosening the mucus too. A spoonful of honey everyday will also work in curing a chest infection, as honey is known to possess anti-bacterial qualities that will fight viruses and bacteria. Drinking herbal tea is also known to work very well for chest congestion. Chest congestion if not treated in a timely manner, can move on to become an even more serious condition, such as pneumonia.
