Home remedies for relief from chigger bites

Chiggers are small microbes that may latch into your skin and quickly multiply to cause itchy and oozing rashes all over your skin. Since chiggers are very small, they are usually not visible to the naked eyes, but if you have recently been out in the woods or places from where you may have picked up chiggers, you may simply deduce their presence from the rashes. Fortunately, there are some simple home remedies to deal with chigger bites.

  • Ice the area and wrap some bandage over the affected areas. This would help cut off the air supply to the skin, therefore preventing itching and spread of infection.
  • Crush an aspirin tablet and rub the powder over chigger bites. This will help soothe the itching and may even help the rashes heal.
  • Acetone also helps soothe the itchy chigger bites. You can apply some thinned nail paint on your chigger bites. This not only treats the pain but also forms a coat which prevents you from scratching your skin off.
  • If the itching is too intense, hold a hair dryer a few inches away from the bites and allow the heat to penetrate the skin. This will soothe the bites and lessen the pain that you may feel.
  • Clean your chigger bites with some warm water and a mild soap, and then apply a thick paste of water and baking soda on it.
  • You may also massage the chigger bites with some mild baby oil. While this may soothe your itching, it is usually only temporary and may cause you some discomfort soon after.
  • Immediately after your shower, while your skin is still slightly wet, rub some castor oil on the chigger bites. This will help you prevent the spread of infection on your body. After applying the oil, wear something comfortable and long sleeved so that the affected areas of the skin are covered.
