My Daughter Is Suffering From Dryness in the Mouth - What's A Good Home Remedy?

If your daughter constantly suffers from a dry mouth , then she may be suffering from a medical condition known as xerostomia. This is characterized by the insufficient production of  saliva. Some of the causes of dry mouth are cigarette smoking and dehydration

Some homemade remedies for dry mouth that you could try are:

  • Minimize the intake of caffeine as this tends to make the mouth even more dry
  • Minimize the intake of acidic and sugary foods such as candies as they tend to make the mouth dry and may also result in tooth decay. On the other hand you could ask your daughter to chew on some sugar free hard candies or even sugar free gum.
  • In some cases of a dry mouth, the person has been known to benefit even if they brush their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste or take a fluoride rinse.
  • Also advice your daughter not to use an alcohol based mouthwash while rinsing or gargling her mouth as the alcohol is known to make the mouth even more dry.
  • As dehydration is also one of the causes of a dry mouth, your daughter should be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids especially clean drinking water. She could also drink water during meals as this will help in chewing and swallowing the food.
  • Sometimes a dry mouth may be caused on account of lack of moisture or humidity in the air. Hence while sleeping you could also place a humidifier in your daughter’s room as this will help in adding moisture to the air. She should also ensure that she breathes through her nose and not through her mouth as this may increase the dryness.
  • As far as possible, she should avoid consuming any antihistamines or decongestants as they may worsen the condition.

Dry mouth indicates less production of saliva. Dry mouth causes difficulty in eating and talking. Saliva protects the enamel of the teeth: so less saliva production affects the teeth and sometimes leads to cavities. Dry mouth may indicate some malfunctioning in the body.

Sometimes, diabetes causes dry mouth as well.Stress and trauma are other factors. Managing stress alone may lead to a lot of improvement in the condition. Meditation, deep breathing, and listening to music are some of the ways to control stress. Dehydration due to improper bowel movements or poor fluid intake can be other causes. A blocked nose can lead to dry mouth, as in such cases, we often breathe through the mouth. For this, try steam inhalation with a few drops of a vaporizer.

Intake of alcohol, certain medications, chemotherapy, and aging are also responsible.

  • Drinking at least eight glasses of water spread over the whole day is one of the best home remedies for dry mouth.
  • Follow good oral hygiene by rinsing the mouth after every meal, brushing (with a fluoride toothpaste) and flossing the teeth two times a day. Keep the tongue clean as well. Visit a dentist for oral health.
  • Air conditioners or room heaters rob off the moisture from the surroundings, so using a humidifier is a good idea.
  • You can have homemade sugar-free candies whenever the mouth feels dry. Commercial sugar-free gums can also be taken.
  • Avoid using pain relievers, decongestants, and antihistamines, as these can aggravate the situation.
  • Chinese green tea, chamomile, and ginger are other home remedies for dry mouth.
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages and acidic soft drinks, citrus juices, diet soda, or any drink that has citric or phosphoric acid in it.
  • Sucking on fruit pits may provide a temporary dry mouth relief.
  • Homeopathy provides effective cures for dry mouth in this case. Consult a homeopath for exact medications.
