Tips for herbal oil preparation at home

Amla or the Indian gooseberry is a deciduous tree that is known for its medicinal properties. It has been used for centuries in India as a hair tonic and in Ayurvedic medicines. Amla hair oil is reputed to be extremely beneficial for hair growth. Some of the benefits ascribed to this oil include its ability to reduce hair loss and as a preventive against dandruff and other fungal infections.

With homemade amla oil you can be sure about the quality of the product and enjoy the complete benefits that can be had from this hair oil. You can also use amla extract to make a homemade shampoo that can be used to treat hair loss.

To make amla hair oil at home you will need amla powder, fenugreek powder and any natural hair oil as a base. One of the common oils used is coconut oil which is also said to provide excellent nourishment for the hair. However, you can use any other oil if you have a preference.

The amla powder can be purchased directly from a store or ordered online. If you can lay your hands on some fresh amla, cut it into little pieces and dry it in the sun. Once the amla has dried, powder it and mix 2 tbsp with 1tbsp of fenugreek powder. Add one cup of coconut oil (or an oil of your choice) to the mixture, mix well and put it in a heating pan.

Heat the mixture over a slow flame. To answer your question about how long to heat the oil for, observe the amla paste very carefully. You will observe fumes coming out of the pan and when the amla paste turns brown, stop heating it. Do not let the amla paste turn black. Allow the oil to cool and filter it into a bottle. Your amla hair oil is now ready to use.

A batch of freshly made amla oil will last you for two weeks. You do not need to refrigerate the oil. Whenever you need to apply it, warm a little and then apply it on your hair. You should also massage it lightly into your scalp. Leave it on your hair for about half an hour before washing it out. Apply the homemade oil about two to three times a week for the best results.
