Formation of gas in the abdominal tract is a normal process. It is generally created due to swallowing of air and due to the breakdown of foods by the intestinal bacteria. Burping is a process in which the gas built up in the stomach is passed through the mouth. Flatulence is the release of gas through the anus. Intestinal gas is usually released out of the body by burping and flatulence. However, when gas is not eliminated properly, the gas builds up in the digestive system and causes bloating.
Excessive gas production in the digestive system leads to bloating, frequent burping and flatulence, which may be embarrassing. The main causes of excessive gas are as follows:
- Aerophagia or swallowing of air
- Consumption of high fiber foods
- Intake of foods with high fat content
- Gastritis
- Irritable bowel syndrome
Bloating is also related to a medical condition namely gastritis. Gastritis is an inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach. It may be acute or chronic. Gastritis may be caused by any one of the following reasons:
- Infection by Helicobacter pylori
- Pernicious anemia
- Persistent use of anti-inflammatory drugs
- Bile reflux
- Excessive intake of alcohol
- Chronic stress
Gastritis bloating is one of the common symptoms of gastritis along with other symptoms such as indigestion, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite, etc. In addition, bloating is also related to constipation and IBS. The American Journal of Gastroenterology has established the relation between bowel gas and IBS.
To get relief from gas and the associated bloating, you can follow these steps:
- Eat slowly and chew your food well
- Avoid carbonated beverages
- Avoid chewing gums
- Reduce the consumption of products that contains sugar in form of high fructose corn syrup, glucose and sucrose
- Reduce the intake of milk and milk products containing lactose. Have yogurt instead.
- Avoid certain vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli
The natural remedies you can try out are regular exercises such as walking, jogging and yoga. Also avoid large meals as this is also a cause of gas.
While home remedies and tips can help with gas, if the problem worsens or persists, it is best to consult with a doctor as symptoms like gas and indigestion could also be indicators of a more serious underlying problem.
