How to get rid of cold sores fast?

Cold sores are very painful, small fluid filled blisters or sores that are formed on the mouth, lips or nose. These sores are caused by a virus, but unlike other viral infections, a cold sore virus is never totally eradicated by one's system and hence the sores caused by this virus have a tendency of recurring. The herpes simplex virus or HSV is what is responsible for causing cold sores. This virus is basically of two types, type 1 and type 2. Cold sores are normally caused by the type 1 virus, while the type 2 virus is sexually transmitted and causes sores in the genital area. The virus related to cold sores, normally lies dormant in the body until it is reactivated by certain circumstances such as anxiety, stress, cold and prolonged sun exposure, causing the sore to break out.

Cold sores are extremely contagious and the virus can be spread through contact with infected saliva or other body fluids. The symptoms of these blisters are a tingling, burning sensation several hours before the appearance of the blisters. The blisters normally last for 7-14 days. Here are a few home remedies that can help treat this condition. Ice is considered to be an excellent treatment for cold sores. Simply rub an ice cube on the blisters for 10-15 minutes. This treatment has to be repeated several times in a day as it will help in soothing the skin. Place a few used tea bags in the refrigerator. Once they are suitably cold, place them on the blisters for a few minutes. This is also known to provide relief. Take an aloe vera leaf and slice it in half. Take one half and place the pulpy side on the sores for a few minutes. As an alternative you could also apply aloe gel directly on the blisters. This will be equally effective in soothing the skin.

Witch hazel is also very commonly used in the treatment of sores and can be applied on the sores directly. Lemon balm extract if applied on the sores is known to accelerate healing and reduce symptoms. Avoid coffee, tea and any kind of acidic or salty food. Oatmeal, whole wheat, seeds, peas, grains, peanuts and chocolates contain high levels of arginine and hence must be avoided totally. Consume a diet that is rich in vitamins A, C and E. Include a lot of garlic in your daily diet and eat plenty of vegetables and fresh fruits.
