Phlegm can be extremely bothersome and cause difficulty in breathing while leaving the affected person irritated and sickly. While it is easy to break up phlegm through over the counter medications, it is always best to try a few home remedies before going in for it. Heat a pot of water with a handful of basil or eucalyptus leaves thrown in. Take it off the stove after it has boiled sufficiently and breathe in the steam. To avoid the steam from escaping, use a cloth to over your head and the pot. Take care, however, to not scald yourself. The steam will help break up the phlegm and allow the body to eject it more easily. Brew a cup of tea by adding crushed ginger and garlic to it. Strain the mixture and sip slowly while hot twice a day for a week for best results. Heat a quarter cup of mustard oil and add some turmeric powder to it. Rub this all over the body and particularly the chest region. The curative properties of both mustard and turmeric will help break up the phlegm. Peel an orange or two and soak it overnight in a pan filled with wine. Cook it in the morning till it gets soft and moist and consume once a day for a week or so. Crush a little licorice root and ginger. Mix the juice with honey and consume twice a day. Extract the juice from a few onions, ginger and basil leaves. Mix together and add half a teaspoon of honey. Drink a spoon of the thick mixture once in the morning and if you wish, an hour before going to bed. Take a glass of warm water and squeeze a lemon into it. Add a teaspoon of table salt and powdered pepper to it. Drink up before going to bed every night. Drink plenty of fluids, particularly plain water to ensure that your body does not get dehydrated. Put a whole lemon and an onion into the juicer and make sure it becomes a thick liquid without any pieces in it. Now add this to a cup of boiling water and wait till it boils again. Take it off the stove and add a teaspoon of honey to the mixture. Wait till it cools down and drink this twice a day for five days. Mix two spoons of grape juice with a teaspoon of honey and consume twice a day to break up phlegm.
