Phlegm is typically the term used to describe the thick, sticky mucus secretion from the various membranes that are present in the nasal passages as well as in the respiratory tract. Phlegm could be yellowish or greenish in color depending on the level of infection in the person. Many times people also experience white foamy phlegm while coughing or sneezing which comes from the lungs. If there is an excessive production of foamy phlegm, then it is usually an indication of an infection of the nose, throat, an allergy or it may even be caused by smoking. Though foamy phlegm or any other phlegm is mostly caused on account of conditions that affect the nasal passages, the phlegm is expelled from the body in a bout of coughing. There is a variation in the composition of the foamy phlegm mucus that is secreted because of the genetics, overall buildup of the immune system and the climatic conditions. All types of phlegm, including foamy phlegm are known to be carriers of various microbes such as the larvae of intestinal parasites like the hookworm. It is always advisable for people suffering from phlegm problems to get the mucus checked for color and consistency as this will help determine the exact cause of the foamy phlegm and the consequent cough. Many a times, a cough that is moist and results in the production of large amount of phlegm is usually a chronic problem that may be caused by an infection to the upper respiratory tract. Similarly, phlegm that may have some strakes or spots of blood in it may also be a cause of concern as it is a symptom of tuberculosis. Foamy phlegm could be reduced by using commercially available antihistamines and decongestants. In very severe cases, the doctor may also prescribe corticosteroids to reduce the inflammation. There are also plenty of home remedies that may be used to get rid of foamy phlegm.
A highly effective and commonly used home remedy is to drink a glass of concentrated lemon juice which helps clear the nose and throat as well as the respiratory tract. One may also mix together some honey and ginger and drink this mixture along with some warm water at least twice a day till the phlegm clears up. One should also avoid eating fatty foods as they are hard to digest and tend to stagnate in the stomach. Undigested food increases the production of phlegm and could result in a lot of discomfort.
