The fungus infection of the foot, which is also known as tinea pedis, happens when the foot is found to be damp and moist most of the time. Therefore, people who wear shoes very regularly and for a prolonged period are more susceptible to fungal infection of the foot. Athletes and other sportspersons are also at an increased risk because they constantly wear shoes for long periods. Additionally, they also take part in physical exercise and sweat a lot. In such cases, the warmth and humidity of the foot increases and becomes a breeding place for the fungus. The fungus especially attacks the areas between the toes because those are usually more moist areas. The fungal infection generally causes a burning and/ or itching sensation in the infected area. The infected area will also become dry and cracked.
Here are some of the home remedies you can try out for remedying the fungal infection. However, if the infection has spread you may have to consult a dermatologist and undergo medical treatment. Meanwhile, you can try a few simple remedies at home. Use onion and garlic paste on the infected skin and wash it off after about an hour or so. Onion and garlic are known to have anti-fungal properties and are popular remedies for infections. Soak a cotton ball in tea tree oil and rub it on the infected skin. You can also use apple cider vinegar, dilute hydrogen peroxide solution, or alcohol in a similar manner on the infection. Sprinkle boric powder and baking soda on the infected skin before wearing socks and shoes. These powders will help absorb moisture and fight of the fungal infection. At the end of your day, remove your shoes and soak your feet in an Epsom water solution for about half an hour.
While you follow these remedies, you should also use preventive steps to ensure that there is a minimal risk of continued infection. Maintain proper hygiene of your feet – clean your feet every day after coming home, preferably with antiseptic soap water. After washing your feet you should wipe them completely dry. Keep at least two pairs of shoes – wear them alternatively so that the shoes get a chance to dry up completely. Keep multiple pairs of socks and always wear a clean pairs of socks. Do not share shoes or socks – fungal infections are contagious and can spread through human contact.
