Toe nail fungus or onychomycisis is a common infection that affects both the finger nails and the toe nails. It is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes that feed on keratin – the protein that makes up the hard surface of the nail, leading to its disfiguration and eventual destruction. This fungus is more commonly known to affect toe nails, due to the moist conditions that tend to exist within shoes. Wearing tight shoes or socks which are filled with sweat increases the chances of the nail being affected by fungi. The risk of the fungal infection also increases when the immune system is weak, or due to exposure to damp areas or public places like locker rooms, saunas, gyms, showers and pools. Not drying the feet well after a bath, cutting the nails too short, or an imbalance in the skin’s pH level also increases the risk of toe nail fungus.
The big toe and the little toe are usually affected by toe nail fungus. The fungal infection may be accompanied by a foul smell or slight pain. The nail often becomes discolored, brittle, thick and foggy, begins to crack or crumble, and may eventually fall off. To prevent toe nail infections due to fungi, the feet should always be kept clean and dry. Wearing comfortable shoes and socks that are clean and free of sweat reduces the risk of toe nail infection. Walking barefoot in public places should be avoided, as these areas are prone to infection.
Hydrogen peroxide is known for its ability to cure a variety of infections. The juice of cranberries, beet and carrots is rich in hydrogen peroxide, which is thought to enhance the effect of vitamin C, increasing the body’s ability to fight infections. Peroxide is probably the cheapest known remedy for treating toe nail infections. Because of the oxidizing and antiseptic properties of hydrogen peroxide, soaking the affected toe nail in it five to six times a day is quite an effective cure for toe nail fungus. A natural disinfectant made with equal parts of vinegar and peroxide quickens the healing of the toe nail affected by fungus. However, toe nail fungus is often quite persistent and may require additional measures too. Soaking the feet in equal parts of apple cider vinegar and warm water for 20-25 minutes a day is recommended. Applying equal proportions of tea tree oil and lavender oil is also an effective home remedy for treating toe nail fungus, both being efficient antifungal agents.
