Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) is used to treat infertility in a natural way; here the female eggs are mixed with male sperm and is placed in the female’s fallopian tubes. The fertilization then takes in a natural way inside the female body.
This method is applied when the fertilization does not take place in the female uterus. First the doctor administers the hormonal drugs which stimulate the female body to produce more eggs. The mature eggs are then collected and are fertilized with the male sperm.
Through laparoscopy the mixture of sperm and eggs are transferred to the female fallopian tube. Laparoscopy is a kind of surgery wherein an incision is made just below the naval and the tube is inserted through it.
Generally after two weeks of transfer of mixture of egg and sperm, woman can go for pregnancy test. The important condition for Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) is that the woman should have at least one fallopian tube working properly and the semen provided should be of high quality.
It is similar to in vitro fertilization method but in in-vitro method the doctor can actually monitor and see whether the process is producing an effective result or not while in the case of Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) it is not possible. Moreover the embryo developed may be of not good quality which cannot be detected earlier.
The success rate of Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) is good, about 27% of women are able to give birth. Since in this technique several eggs are transferred so the chances of multiple births are there.
Nevertheless the technique is considered to be an effective way of dealing with infertility. But before going for it check with your doctor whether your body conditions are suitable for it or not, if yes then well and good otherwise you will have to go for some different technique.
