Allergy Skin Test Technique
by Sam Malone
Allergy skin test technique is a simple and cost effective method to focus on the sensitivity to allergy of an individual. Skin tests are the simplest methods to identify skin allergies. The cause behind sneezing, skin rashes and wheezing is detected by skin test. In its own way, the skin is the most sensitive part of the body. The principle behind the commencement of allergy is determined. Allergy intervention technique involves the avoidance of allergens and immunotherapy or allergy shots.
Allergic conditions, namely dermatitis and allergic asthma are detected by skin testing. It can be considered safe for all age group. Skin testing is restricted in certain cases. Individuals on antihistamines and anti depressants are not recommended a skin test, as they hinder the results. People on heart burn medications are also exempted. Clear skin is unavailable in cases of individuals suffering from eczema or any other skin condition, as major parts of the skin are affected.
Anaphylactic reaction is possible in individuals, who are extremely sensitive to certain allergens. Skin test aids in determining conditions of allergy, such as asthma, hay fever and dermatitis. In vitro allergen specific IgE antibody test proves beneficial for those individuals who are refrained from skin tests. Blood tests are analogous to skin tests in their efficacy, but remain costly and less sensitive. Immunotherapy or desensitization is helpful in identifying the allergens responsible for allergic reactions. Medications are withheld for 10 days, prior to performance of skin tests. Over the counter antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants and heartburn medications are a few of them.
Three effective kinds of allergy tests are intradermal test, patch test and scratch test. Intradermal or intracutaneous test, as the name indicates, is done by injecting the allergen into the skin. This is especially done for individuals suffering from penicillin and insect bite allergy. Epicutaneous patch test is the method by which, an allergen is applied to a patch. This is kept on the skin and determines the causative factor of contact dermatitis. Allergies, due to preservatives, hair dyes, latex, resins, medications, metals and fragrances are detected by this technique.
Scratch test or percutaneous prick test is done by placing pure extracts of the allergen by scratching or pricking the skin. This puncture test identifies, insect poison, pollen, animal dander, penicillin, food and dust mites. Around 40 different allergens are determined by these allergy skin tests. Redness and itching are the most common noticeable symptoms of allergy skin test. Hence, such tests are performed under the guidance of a physician.
