Try using ground flax seed. I buy my seed whole and grind it with a coffee grinder. You can also buy it already ground but you do have to store it in the refrigerator. The whole seed can be stored in your cupboard. Follow directions on box or container. It works wonders.

I have had great experience in lowering my bad cholesterol by eating steel cut oats. You can prepare them yourself ( I used a double boiler and made enough for a week) or purchase it frozen at Trader Joe's. I have also frozen mine when I make an overabundance.

When you eat oatmeal regularly, the cholesterol binds itself to the oats which contain lots of fiber and in turn, is absorbed. Oatmeal is high in fiber. My bad cholesterol was at a dangerous level and I was in dire need of good cholesterol. I was told by my doctor to embark on a strict 30 day regimen of 1 1/2-2 cups of oatmeal in the morning and my bad cholesterol was reduced by more than 25% with the oats alone (no sugar added). If you don't like the taste of bland oatmeal, you can make it with milk instead of water, it makes it taste really good. Just follow the instructions for the water and replace with 2 or 1% milk. Do not use the whole milk, it has a lot of fat, hence more cholesterol. As always, consult your doctor, get your blood checked before you start the oatmeal and after you finish the 30 days to see the effectiveness. Results are generally very good. But your doctor may want to prescribe something to help you control it and bring it to a safe and satisfactory level. As a rule, I continue to eat oatmeal, and even buy the quaker flavor varieties and eat two packs for breakfast. Cholesterol is pretty serious if you don't control it and can cause damage to your heart. Be heart healthy and be ready to help your self with this simple remedy of oatmeal. Oh, you can ask your doctor to set you up with a register dietician and also ask about the food products labeled "heart healthy". there really good tasting but most important good to your heart and for your overall health.
