10 Ways to Keep Your Body Cool in Summer

by Garreth Myers

Keeping yourself cool in summer is not only about comfort but also protection from various health conditions that are prevalent in summer. Soaring temperatures may result in exhaustion, cramps and heat strokes. The body does have its own system of regulating temperature, but in order for it to work properly we need to stay hydrated. The most common problem that people face in summer is dehydration. When fluid levels in the body are low, various unpleasant symptoms may develop, some of which can even be quite severe. These include tiredness, irritability, headaches, cramps and dizziness.

Here are 10 ways to stay cool in summer:

  1. To prevent dehydration you need to drink plenty of water every day. At least six to eight glasses of water daily are a must. It is advisable to drink more water on days when you know you are going to be out in the sun for long hours. Fluid loss occurs when the body sweats and hence it is essential to fill up on water to replenish the fluid levels in the body. Sugary drinks should be avoided as they are unhealthy and are also not very effective in quenching thirst.
  2. Try and indulge in any physical activity, like walking or exercising during the cooler hours of the day such as early morning or late evening. This will exert less strain on your body. Avoid doing any physical work in the afternoons. Experts also advise people to avoid exercising in air-conditioned gyms and health clubs because exerting your body regularly in natural heat boosts tolerance and enables you to function well even in hot climates.
  3. Always wear loose fitting, comfortable and light weight clothes during the summer months. Cotton is a good, natural fabric that lets your body breathe and also absorbs the moisture from your skin when you sweat. Footwear is just as important, so avoid wearing heavy, closed shoes and opt for light, airy sandals instead.
  4. Try not to wear dark colored clothes when the temperature is high. Dark colors especially black clothes tend to retain heat and light. Avoid wearing darker colors such as navy blue and olive green, and at times when you have to wear them, team them up with a lighter colored top. Lighter colors in conjunction with light fabrics will help you sweat less and keep you more comfortable. White reflects heat and light and is the best color to wear in summer. Opt for whites, pale pastels and creams. Loose fitted, white pants and a light colored cotton t-shirt is the best thing to wear when you are spending a great deal of time outdoors.
  5. The ceiling fan is quite underrated as a household appliance, but is highly effective in beating the summer heat. It uses significantly less power than an air conditioner. It is also much cheaper and easy to install. You can even use portable fans that are great to carry around. In case you have to use the air conditioner, ensure that all windows and doors are kept shut to enable better cooling. It is advisable to use air conditioners that are energy efficient as this will keep your electricity bills lower. Make sure you clean out the filters regularly to enhance the flow of air.
  6. To avoid heaviness and discomfort during those hot, summer days, it is advisable to consume smaller meals frequently during the day. This is easy on your digestive system and metabolism and helps to keep you cool and comfortable. Studies also show that eating spicy foods is beneficial during summer months. This is because such foods induce sweating. When the skin becomes damp, evaporation takes place and this leads to a cooling sensation. The discomfort caused whilst eating may not be bearable to all however.
  7. Stay cool at home by ensuring good circulation of air. Keep all the windows open and use shades or bamboo blinds to deflect sunlight. The simplest and most inexpensive way of cooling the home is to soak some bed sheets in water and hang them over the windows. The water will evaporate and cool the room. It is also a good idea to switch off appliances when not in use as these generate heat.
  8. For an immediate cooling effect, take a cool shower. This is an excellent way to lower your body temperature and it also helps to keep the air inside the house cool. For a more refreshing effect, pour rose water in a spray bottle and spray your face and body whenever you feel hot.
  9. Another beneficial way to cool your body is to run some cold water over your wrist. This helps to chill the pulse point and brings your body temperature down. Do this for just a minute every hour. You can even splash cool water on your temples for a cooling effect.
  10. It often becomes difficult to sleep in hot weather. A good way to cool down your bed is to pour ice water into your regular hot water bottle and place it beneath the knees or feet.
