Spastic colon is just another term for a very common gastrointestinal disorder, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This term describes the spontaneous muscle contractions or spasms that occur in the large intestines. This condition is characterized by nausea, cramping, stomach pain, gas, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Over a period of time you may also experience stress, depression or frustration because of your spastic colon.
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for IBS and the treatment is mainly aimed at managing the condition. The good news is that once you learn to control this problem, you will also see an improvement in the symptoms.
In case you are suffering from a moderate or severe form of IBS, your doctor may recommend:
- Fiber supplements like methylcellulose and psyllium with fluids
- Over the counter anti-diarrheal medication like loperamide
- Anticholinergic medication to relieve painful bowel spasms
- Tri-cyclic antidepressants like imipramine and amittriptyline
- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine or paroxetine
- Antibiotics (in rare cases)
Many patients prefer opting for minimal medication, but manage their symptoms with the help of complementary treatments, like:
- Acupuncture
- Herbal therapy (peppermint)
- Probiotics
- Meditation and yoga
- Massage therapy
Dietary habits play a vital role in the treatment of spastic colon. Given below are a few points to keep in mind while planning your diet:
- Eat smaller meals, spaced at frequent intervals during the day. A large meal can cause symptoms like bloating and cramping to worsen.
- Consume a higher amount of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grain. These foods are high in fiber and relieve constipation.
- Eliminate problem foods like citrus fruits, chocolate, soda, coffee, oil, spices, alcohol & artificial sweeteners. If gas is a problem, avoid cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli & beans.
- Cut down on dairy products, especially the whole-fat variety. In fact, it is best to substitute milk with plain, unflavored yogurt.
- Drink plenty of fluids during the day. Try to have at least 7 to 8 glasses of water, in addition to homemade fruit/ vegetable juice.
Exercising stimulates normal intestinal contractions and relieves several IBS symptoms. Try to walk, swim, cycle or jog for about half an hour each day. Once you get used to this regime, you can increase the duration to one hour.
Spastic colon, like any gastrointestinal disorder, should be closely monitored by a medical expert. If you are planning to try self-care and home treatment options, make sure that you first consult your doctor.
