Sensory Hearing Loss

by Sharon Hopkins

Ear disorders do happen and it is not such an easy thing for the person involved and for those around him or her. There is this ear condition known as sensory hearing loss. This condition is a result to some problems occurring in a person's inner ear, in the brain, or in the nerve going to the brain from the inner ear.

This hearing loss is considered by experts as idiopathic. This means that there is no known cause for such disorder. Though they have concluded some factors as to why this condition occurs. Some of these factors are age, heredity, physical and environmental factors such as noise damage, tumor, hearing loss that is drug-induced, and trauma-induced problems. Viral infections (CMV, herpes simplex, mumps, rubella, influenza) can also be a factor for sensory hearing loss. Vascular diseases and autoimmune diseases can also be factors for sensory hearing loss.

There are ways to determine if certain individuals have sensory hearing loss. In babies for example that have congenital deafness, they would fail in responding to sounds. They would not do baby babble or even produce other baby noises. For adults, the sounds they hear would be distorted, maybe quieter, less clear. If there are high tones in the environment, these would not be easily heard. Sensory hearing loss can also make a person not hear sounds of 'z','f' and 's'. If there are background noises, speech may not be heard that easily by someone with this hearing condition.

There are ways to treat sensory hearing loss fortunately. One is through a cochlear implant. This is a device, a small electronic one that is implanted behind a person's ear. Cochlea development is basically the purpose of this implant. This means that the auditory nerve fibers found in the person's cochlea will be stimulated directly by a cochlear implant. An implant consists of external and internal components.

Another way of treating sensory hearing loss is through hearing aids. There are various hearing aid types out there, and surely you will find one that fits you. You can check your doctor for that matter. A hearing aid is an electronic device, small in size and is fitted into your ear. There will be a tiny microphone in that device and sounds will be picked up and amplified through a speaker so you can hear it. Do not hesitate to avail of one, and make your life better.
