Fever blisters, also known as cold sores, are infections that are caused by the herpes virus. It is recurrent in nature and is also quite painful. Fever blister treatment should be immediate, and should be given as soon as a breakout occurs.

There are several topical as well as oral medications available to get rid of fever blisters. The medications shorten the course, giving fever blister relief. The treatments usually alleviate the symptoms, especially the pain, which can be quite severe. They also cut down the time taken by the sores to heal completely. The number and size of lesions that occur on the skin can also be decreased. Most of the medications help in preventing the fever blisters from recurring. There is no permanent fever blister remedy and therefore the medications should be taken regularly and on time

  • The herpes virus is an extremely infectious one. So if you want to get rid of fever blisters, the foremost thing to do is to quarantine the first sores that begin to appear. Don’t touch the sores because you may end up spreading them. As soon as a breakout occurs, wash the sores with soap and water. Also take care to avoid close physical contact with other people so as to contain the virus.
  • If you have cold sores around your mouth, keep changing your toothbrush and use a new toothbrush after an outbreak because you may infect yourself again by using an infected toothbrush.
  • There are several antiviral medications available for treating fever blisters. While these may not be a complete fever blister cure, they may provide intermittent relief and help delay recurrence of another outbreak. For best results, start taking these medicines as soon as you experience an outbreak.
  • Cold sores are often accompanied by fever and hence their name. The most foolproof fever blister remedy is to take care of the fever first.
  • One of the best home remedies for fever blisters is icing. You may apply cold compression using an ice pack. However, no matter how much comfort the ice is giving you, make sure you do not ice the sores for more than 15 minutes.
  • A whole milk compress is another effective fever blister remedy. Use this pack at room temperature and wash the skin after you are through.
  • Some people also prefer to prevent outbreaks by taking medicines regularly. The safety and authenticity of this method of suppression has not yet been checked. However, those who have had six or more outbreaks in a year can take antiviral tablets two times in a day. This helps reduce recurrences and controls viral shedding.
