A flash burn of the eyes is a condition that usually occurs in people exposed to high intensity light like a welding arc. This usually can be avoided with the use of proper protection using welding goggles; however, prolonged exposure to high intensity light will cause the problem to redevelop.
A flash burn affects all parts of the eyes starting with a severe constriction of the pupils. The pupils are the muscle-like tissue in the eye with a small aperture in it to allow light to pass through. A flash burn can cause the pupils to constrict one or both eyes. The next symptom that occurs is the profuse secretion of tears from the eyes. This is a nearly standard response to any form of eye irritation. The exposure then goes on to cause the muscles that control the movement of the eyelids to begin twitching. Photophobia or an aversion to light also takes place. This is an effect that is caused by a hypersensitive cornea sending too many signals to the optic nerve and can even cause pain to occur. All these symptoms are temporary and the condition itself usually resolves itself in a day or so. However, it is important to understand how light can cause damage to the various parts of the eye. Therefore, taking adequate precautions when you have to look directly at light by using goggles is very important.
Some of the cures for this condition include the use of a topical anesthetic to prevent the extremely painful effects and simply resting the eyes. Resting the eye fundamentally means staying away from all kinds of light whether it is sun light or bright artificial light. The next therapy you can use is the application of vapor rub on the cheeks, which may cause the pain to be more pronounced, but will also relieve and solve the situation in seconds. Cold, soaked tea bags should also be placed over the eyes. A few antiseptic eye drops will serve you well, as the last thing required at this point is the eyes to be infected. TV should be completely avoided as during this time due to the sudden fluctuations in brightness and the additional stress of trying to focus. Eye massages should also be attempted where you close your eyes and gently massage over the pupil area. The final and most important remedy is to get sound sleep for a day.
