Diarrhoea and vomiting are usually seen as a symptom of any other underlying condition. Loss of fluids results in electrolyte imbalance. This in turn results in dehydration. Fatigue and weakness are the common symptoms. Oral rehydration solution is easily prepared at the home level. Replacement of fluid loss helps in preventing diarrhoeal deaths, which are common in the world. It is a simple and cost effective technique of saving the individual. One level teaspoon of salt and eight teaspoons of sugar are mixed in a litre of clean, boiled and cooled drinking water.
Another method of preparation is by mixing quarter teaspoon of salt, quarter teaspoon of baking soda and two tablespoons of sugar or honey in a litre of boiled and cooled drinking water. Half to full large cup is given to older children, whereas children under two years are given between a quarter and half a cup of oral rehydration solution. Preparation calls for hygienic practices, by washing hands properly. About three quarts of ORS is given for older children and adults.
Three finger pinch of salt and a scoop of sugar (about 20 grams) are mixed in half a litre of clean and boiled water. Fresh fruit juice, tender coconut water and weak tea are allowed. Rice water, gruels and strained vegetable soups are recommended.
