Split fingers or fissure in skin is similar to heel cracks. It occurs due to cold temperature, frequent washing of hands, dry palms and so on. The fissure creates a rupture of the body's defense mechanism, thereby resulting in easy infection. Usage of a harsh cleaner to the hands also affects. These, in turn remove the moisture of the skin, in addition to the dirt. The outer skin is more fragile and brittle, due to moisture removal and this facilitates the easy occurrence of split fingers. Excessive bathing is avoided in the wintertime, as it results in skin splits. Cold climate reduces perspiration, thereby decreasing moisture in the hands. This indirectly prevents finger splits. A bath with warm water is recommended. A mild soap with moisturizers is used. Topical application of creams on the finger splits, immediately after bath is an effective remedy. Keep the hands covered with cotton gloves. A petroleum jelly rub or coconut oil helps in keeping the hands wet and greasy. Fungi static ointments are effective and prove beneficial. Increased intake of fluids keeps the hands and body hydrated.
