how do you help someone with a severe case of diverticulitises with absist on the outside of the colon wall

Diverticulitis is a condition that is characterized by the rupturing of diverticuli in the colon. Diverticuli are small pockets present along the walls of the colon. They form when the inner lining of the colon pushes through weak areas on the outer lining. Diverticulitis develops when the diverticuli become infected and inflamed. The colon or large intestine is responsible for eliminating the waste products from the body. It is comprised of a long tube which may develop tissue sacs that press against its walls due to pressure. These diverticuli usually occur as an individual ages. The symptoms of this condition include pain and tenderness in the abdomen and fever. Some individuals with this condition generally do not experience any symptoms, while some face infection, bleeding, cramps and Constipation.

Excessive pressure from within the intestinal walls is thought to result in Diverticulitis. With advancing age, the outer lining of the colon starts becoming thick. This causes a narrowing of the space between the outer and inner layers. As such the stools pass more slowly though the intestine, resulting in increased pressure. If the stools are harder, due to lack of fiber in the diet, then the pressure increases further. Repeated straining during bowel movements can also raise the pressure and lead to the development of diverticula. The symptoms of Diverticulitis are similar to the symptoms of various other disorders of the digestive tract. Diverticulitis requires medical treatment and can be detected by symptoms such as blood discharge through bowel movements, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and constipation or diarrhea. Left untreated, Diverticulitis can become aggravated and lead to further complications which include symptoms such as increasing pain in the abdomen, pain while urinating, persistent vomiting and long-term constipation.

It is very important to include high-fiber in the diet to prevent Diverticulitis. Foods such as whole grain products, fruits, vegetables, dried fruits, barley and beans add a lot of fiber to the system and regulate proper bowel movements. As such the pressure within the colon is reduced. Brown rice is very good for the digestive system and provides plenty of fiber. Also, increase the intake of garlic as it is very beneficial for the digestive system. It will also keep Diverticulitis in check and prevent further aggravation. Papaya is the only fruit that contains papain, which is known to aid digestion. Papaya can be taken raw or in the form of juice. Pears help to ease inflammation in the digestive tract and may be consumed regularly.

Consuming highly refined, processed and low fibre foods can cause pressure on the colon wall leading to formation of pouches called diverticula and inflammation. If the pouches still persist, then the feces may remain in these pouches causing internal bleeding and thus infection. These could lead to gas formation, indigestion, constipation as well as diarrhea.

Drink loads of water as it tend to soften the stools and can combat constipation. Water can improve the digestion capacity of the intestine and leads to ease in peristaltic movement of the bowel.

Improve the intake of fibre in the diet. Have more of whole grain cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetable. As much as possible, consume the skin of the fruits and vegetables and pulses. Have sprouted pulses which will help in the digestibility of the food. Whole wheat breads or bran breads can be preferred than white breads, brown rice, yoghurt can be consumed instead of refined foods, tea or coffee. These high fibre diets help in reducing the pressure on the colon.

Avoid larger and few meals. Instead have small frequent healthy meals. Avoid junk or fast foods. Regular exercise or aerobics can improve the blood supply to the colon.

Vitamins and minerals can help against diverticulosis. Potassium, magnesium helps in improving the nerves and strengthening the colon. Vitamin C helps in killing the infection and in flushing out the toxic material. Vitamin E is also helpful for patients
