Ear infection advice

I was diagnosed with an ear infection one week ago and have been taking amoxicillin since then. I have had fluid in my ear for the whole week. It is really bothering me. Will this clear up on its own? Should it be drained by now? What can I do?

Ear infection advice

Along with the medications prescribed by your specialist try the following simple home remedies to treat ear infection

  • With regular use of these medications the fluid in your ear will often clear on its own, however if it doesn't then don't try anything to drain it by yourself, take some help of a specialist to drain the fluid from the ear if it is bothering you. Never prick the ear with toothpicks, pens or hair pins as it would increase the chances of infection.
  • Apply warm water compress outside the ears to ease the ear pain caused due to ear infection.
  • Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties, pour 2 drops of tea tree oil in the ear to get rid of the infection.
  • 2-3 drops of warm olive oil or warm mustard oil poured in ear would also be helpful in treating ear infections and drain the fluid from the ear. Avoid putting oil in the ear if you have a perforation.

If the infection gets severe or if the fluid does not drain on its own then consult a specialist for help.
